Guest post - The Basics for a Good Sleep, by Alyssa Reid

Posted on by Kathryn O'Hara

As we all know, sleep is a really important aspect of our health and when we are struggling with pain, getting a good, rested sleep, can be elusive. Ultimately, if we are sleeping on a mattress, pillow and bedding that isn’t giving us the proper support and comfort, then we are setting ourselves up for discomfort and the inability to relax and drift off to slumberland.

Sleep (and the lack thereof) affects us in a myriad of ways beyond just feeling tired.  In fact, it is a vicious cycle of not sleeping well, that increases our pain, can cause anxiety, depression and anger as well as stress and reduces our energy levels.  Lack of sleep  also affects our concentration and increases ‘brain fog’.

Ultimately, no matter what aromatherapy, hot soaks in Epsom salts or warm drinks that we try, we need to be honest here.  If your mattress, pillows and bedding aren’t providing you with support and comfort, then achieving a good sleep (where you are waking up refreshed vs being in even more pain) is going to be even more of a struggle.

So, in this blog, I thought it would be important to look at the basics for a good sleep – the obvious - mattress, pillows and bedding.

The Mattress

If we don’t get the mattress right for a good, comfortable sleep, then ultimately, we are putting ourselves in a position (or many uncomfortable positions!) to reduce our opportunity of sleeping – and sleeping well.

Everybody is different in regards to what they require from a mattress…And if you are sharing a bed, there is every chance that what you require in regards to firmness might differ from the needs of your bed mate.

It is exactly this reason why we love the N:Rem Sleep System so much!  Because the mattress is made up of interchangeable foam tablets that are varying degrees of firmness (and softness), ultimately allowing each person in the bed to create their side to fit their own needs and requirements.

And…for £1 a day – no matter what size mattress?  Investing in our comfort and knowing that being comfortable and getting a great sleep is setting ourselves up in the best position possible in order to reduce pain, depression, anxiety and brain fog - as well as having a lot more energy to deal with each and every day. Pillow Talk

Getting the right pillow is a feat in itself – there are so many to choose from!  Whether it is memory foam, down, feather or synthetic filler, ultimately, not only are there so many different pillow types, everybody is unique in regards to what they require. It also depends on how you sleep – side, stomach, back – or for many struggling with pain and attempting to find a comfortable position…all over the place!

A great pillow that allows you to mould it under your neck, yet is malleable to suit your sleeping style is the 100% organic CalmingBreath buckwheat pillow.  It is fantastic for neck support (and neck pain) and works well for side sleeping, too. It also comes in a variety of sizes.

Sensational Sheets

On top of having a comfortable mattress and pillow is your bedding.  If you are looking for something super soft, cosy, comfortable, warm and dries quickly, check out these Canadian fleece sheets.  (When they go on our bed, hubby says they are ‘like sleeping on a cloud’).  Something we look forward to every year once the days get cooler.

If you struggle with being too hot in bed (or for the summer), jersey sheets are amazing.  (Think soft 100% cotton t-shirts).  They are breathable, soft and extremely comfortable.

And Lastly…

One (or actually four!) little things that can make a huge difference are elastic sheet fasteners. If you struggle with the bedding coming off when you move (and of course, putting it back in place can be super painful), then elastic sheet fasteners really are awesome.  They take just a few minutes to put on and can save a lot of time (not to mention pain) to keep your sheets in place.

Conclusion

Getting to sleep, staying asleep and waking up feeling refreshed and not in even MORE pain can be a struggle when you are dealing with chronic pain, fibromyalgia and M.E.

However…by investing in a good mattress that provides support and comfort, a pillow that provides the right kind of support and fits your requirements based on the type of sleeper you are and bedding that is comfy, cosy (or cool!) ultimately sets you up in the best position to get a better sleep.

Making the investment in these things is ultimately making an investment in yourself! When you have the proper mattress and bedding, they can make a huge difference in your pain, your energy levels, reduce brain fog and help with mood immensely.
