Buying a mattress online - what you need to know

Posted on by Kathryn O'Hara

Going shopping is not always a fun experience, especially when you’re in pain and feeling exhausted. Even worse, a mattress probably isn’t what most people would consider an exciting purchase, but rather, just a necessity.

Online shopping means we can now order almost anything we want over the internet, and get it delivered right to our door, so we can avoid the stress and crowds at the local retail park and stay in our cosy pyjamas with a cup of tea.

The recommended lifespan of a mattress is 7-8 years, but so many of us leave it 15 or more years before we even consider buying a new one, waiting until we redecorate our bedrooms or perhaps move house to bite the bullet and invest in our sleep. If your current mattress is old, worn out and lumpy, or you’re not sleeping as comfortably as you used to, being pulled in to a dip that is no longer the right shape or size to suit your own individual need, it’s time to replace it.

We all want to try before we buy, but testing a mattress in a store can be embarrassing, making you feel very self-conscious. Not to mention, 5 minutes sitting awkwardly on a mattress in the middle of a store is not enough to tell us whether or not we will get a good, comfortable night’s sleep for months and years to come.

After trying the third or fourth mattress, you can’t even remember what the first one felt like. You make an impulse decision and leave the store £1000+ off to await your delivery. 2-3 weeks later, your new mattress arrives and you can’t wait to climb in to bed, but after the first few nights you realise that you’re sleeping no better than you were on your old mattress and buyers remorse sets in. Arghhh what have I done? I should have chosen differently! The excitement you first felt turns in to regret and the thought of having to repeat the cycle all over again, let alone shell out further money, fills you with dread.

Choosing the right mattress really can make a difference on how well you sleep. Sleep is an essential part of our lives and is the single most important behavioural experience that assists us with both physical and mental health, helping us to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the challenges of the day.

At N:rem, buying a mattress online really does give you the opportunity to ‘try before you buy’- in the comfort of your own home. Ok, so you have purchased a mattress, but, you get 100 nights to trial it and make sure you made the right decision. If you feel you made the wrong choice, you can return it hassle-free.

Most online mattress retailers like Leesa, Eve and Casper only make one type of mattress. It’s available in different sizes, but you don’t need to choose between excessive options such as pillow top, zip and link, spring count and comfort levels.

The N:rem sleep system offers more. Although it’s only one type of mattress, the comfort for both you and your partner can be customised at any time, in your own home. With 5 zones of 3 different densities of foam on each side of the mattress, you can truly bespoke your comfort to suit your individual needs.

The foam inserts can be washed and cleaned assisting with the cleanliness and hygiene issues, the cherry on the cake complimenting the naturally hypoallergenic open pore structure of the foam itself.

The sprung base allows for ‘bounce’, moving away from the characteristic firm heavy feel of a 100% memory foam mattress. Not only that, the reduced weight in the foam spring combination allows for ease of moving the entire mattress and changing and remaking your bed.

Additionally, each component part of the mattress is fully replaceable over time so you won’t need to wait 8-10 years to replace parts that may have seen more wear and tear. You can simply replace these parts as and when required giving yourself the feel and comfort of a brand new mattress without having to go through the whole distress purchase cycle when your mattress begins to get uncomfortable.

This assists with spreading the pain and thought of yet another expensive purchase and ultimately will help facilitate the 7-8 hours of sleep per night that we all require for both our physical and mental health.
