10 Tips for Living with a Chronic Pain Condition

Posted on by Kathryn O'Hara

It’s estimated that around 28million adults in the UK are thought to be living with some form of chronic pain (pain that has lasted for three months or more) and as the population ages, this figure is set to grow.

Living with pain can have a devastating impact on our lives, affecting our independence, mobility and the ability to work. Not only this, but chronic pain conditions can be linked to other issues such as depression and anxiety.

Here are 10 top tips to help anyone suffering from chronic pain:

1. Deep breathing or meditation

Deep breathing and meditation can help you to relax, which can ease pain.

    2. Reduce stress

Stress can intensify your pain. Try techniques like colouring to help reduce your stress and distract yourself from your pain.

    3. Exercise

Exercise produces endorphins which can help to relieve some pain.

    4. Cut back on alcohol

Consuming alcohol can affect your sleep. Lack of sleep can enhance your pain so try cutting back on alcohol to ensure you can get a good, restful sleep.

    5. Join a support group

Join a group or online forum where you can share stories with other chronic pain sufferers. Sharing tips and getting advice from others can help you to cope with your pain.

    6. Quit smoking

Smoking can worsen painful circulation problems, so quit if you can.

    7. Track your pain level and activities

Note down your pain level each day along with the activities you did. This can help your doctor to understand how you are living with your condition.

    8. Get a massage

A  massage can relieve tension and help with stress, especially good for back and neck pain.

    9. Eat a healthy diet

Having a well-balanced diet can help with digestion and weight as well as reducing your risk of heart disease and improving blood sugar levels.

    10. Get a good night’s sleep

Getting a good sleep is easier said than done when you’re suffering with chronic pain. Finding the right mattress that gives you support and comfort where you need it is key to getting comfortable.

The N:rem sleep system is a mattress designed to help chronic pain sufferers to get a better night’s sleep, so you don’t get stuck in the vicious cycle of increased pain with lack of sleep.
